Written by: John SuauPublication Date: June 22, 2012
The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum continues to offer live tank demonstrations and shelling activities throughout the summer. The Museum, home to more than 35 exhibits consisting of thousands of shell and mollusk specimens and a library, is a great place for visitors with an interest in shelling.
· Live Tank Demonstration: See live mollusks up close—watch a fighting conch use its foot for locomotion; see a lightning whelk slam shut its trap door for protection; or view scallops as they zip across the tank with jet propulsion skills. Available upon request (summer only); please contact Diane Thomas at (239) 395-2233 or email: dothomas@shellmuseum.org.
· Shelling 101: Everything you wanted to know about shells and shell makers, but were afraid to ask: learn how to find, clean, and pack shells for safe travel. Mondays from 2:00-2:30 p.m. (summer only). Free with Museum admission.
· Walk the Beach with the Experts: Free family beach walks: A Museum docent will teach you how to find and identify shells. Learn what mollusks eat, how they move, and the environments they live in. Participants will meet at Gulfside Park on Sanibel on Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. (summer only). The walk will last about an hour. Program is free; beach parking fees will apply.
Located at 3075 Sanibel-Captiva Road, The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum is open daily from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information about the museum and its programs, call (239) 395-2233, or visit shellmuseum.org.
