Shell of the Week: The Chestnut Frog Snail

Marsupina bufo (Bruguière, 1792) is a western Atlantic species of the frog snail family Bursidae that reaches an average height of 60 mm. The shell has a squashed, compressed shape with a sculpture of small projections distributed along faint spiral cords. The Chestnut Frog Snail can be found from North Carolina to east Florida, Florida Keys, and in the Caribbean Sea, south to northeastern Brazil. Do not confuse this species with the Indo-West Pacific Red-mouth Frog Snail whose scientific name, Tutufa bufo, has the same specific epithet, or “last name.”
