Shell of the Week: The Cuba Frog Snail

Dulcerana cubaniana (A. d’Orbigny, 1847) is a member of the frog snail family Bursidae that may reach 55 mm (about 2.2 inch). Cuba Frog Snails feed on polychaete worms, which they anesthetize with saliva then proceed to ingest whole. The species is found in the tropical western Atlantic from off Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and throughout the Caribbean Sea (including the Bahamas). In the past, the species was thought to have a much wider distribution including the Indian and Pacific oceans. Recent genetic studies, however, have shown what was considered to be a single species with a very broad geographic distribution actually consists of separate species.
