Shell of the Week: The Roostertail Conch

Aliger gallus is one of the true conchs in the family Strombidae. It is closely related to the renowned Queen Conch, Aliger gigas. The Roostertail Conch gets its name from the shape of its posterior canal, which looks like the tail of a rooster. Roostertail Conchs are found from southeastern Florida, Bahamas, Bermuda, throughout the Caribbean south to northeastern Brazil. The species averages about 120 mm in length but may reach 197 mm. Roostertail Conchs feed on seaweed and can be found in seagrass beds or sand or rubble. The ending of the species name, gallus, means rooster in Latin!
