Shell of the Week: The Widemouth Rock Snail

Plicopurpura patula (Linnaeus, 1758), is a gastropod of the family Muricidae that may reach almost 10 cm (about 4 inches) in size. The species is mostly found in the intertidal zone (zone between high and low tides) of rocky shores along a broad swath of the tropical western Atlantic, including the Caribbean, east coast of Florida, and the Florida Keys. Widemouth Rock Snails are known to feed on bivalves, gastropods, and some other small marine invertebrates. In a paper published in 2023*, the species was recorded for the first time in Europe, from the coast of northern Spain.
